Reasons we love engineers – walking 300 miles for an interview!

It’s not everyone who would walk over 300 miles for a job interview, especially if there hadn’t even been a job advertised. But that’s exactly what Ayrshire born, William Murdoch, the inventor of gas lighting did at the age of 23 in 1777.

Industry Interview: Foundation Apprenticeships, bridging the skills gap in industry

Throughout 2015 employers have continued to highlight their concern over skills gaps within the engineering and manufacturing sectors. To create opportunities for the next generation of engineers to develop their knowledge, skills and gain recognised qualifications and a genuine understanding of the industry, a new engineering foundation apprenticeship started its two year pilot in 2014.

Helen Young, Depute Head of Engineering at West Lothian College, one of two Scottish colleges involved in the trial, caught up with us to let us know how the pilot is progressing after its first full year, share feedback from those on the course and learn how industry can get involved in developing talent for the future. Industry Interview: Scotland Food and Drink Skills Academy

Currently employing 360,000 people, Scotland’s Food and Drink industry is estimated to be worth over £16bn by 2017 and will clearly play a significant role in Scotland’s future economic success.

To ensure the industry achieves its ambitious target, Food and Drink employers must look at how to attract, retain and develop talent into what is becoming an increasingly competitive sector.

Providing services and support designed to influence Government policy, develop new training initiatives and promote best practice, the Scotland Food and Drink Skills Academy (SFDSA) is one organisation focussed on skills development across the industry.
